There is limited street parking at the Docks of White Bear Lake, however we are authorized to park in the large Kowalski’s lot.
White Bear is an attractive recreational lake due to it’s primarily sandy bottom, large size (2,400 acres) and close proximity to the Twin Cities. The lake can get busy on weekends in the summer. Lake levels will be a bit low this year, but White Bear is a big deep lake so skiers, tubers and sun-bathers shouldn't worry. There's plenty of open water for boating fun!
Maximum depth is 83 feet and the lake offers an abundance of northern pike, largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie. Anglers will find Muskie, although not many. Anglers won’t find perch, smallmouth bass, or bullhead. Due to the immense boat traffic on this lake and the clarity of the water, it's best to limit your fishing time to early morning and evening.
White Bear is prime largemouth bass fishing. Roger Rucci (a local tournament angler) suggests using a white spinnerbait with a silver blade; or a 1/8 oz black mushroom head jig with a 4 to 6-inch pumpkinseed Berkley Grub or a gold X-Rap.
You can find productive bassy areas all over the lake. Mark Schwietz, who operates White Bear Fishing, suggests starting first up at Ordway's Bar on the upper east side of the lake or the deep, weedy areas south of the peninsula. Because of the lower water levels, docks are no longer prime locations. In the summer, he likes the deeper weedy and rocky edges at about 12 to 16 foot depth. Sometimes, deeper.
He also marvels at the growing population of muskies in this lake. Some are over 50 inches now and growing. Low-light periods are the best times to pursue them, especially during a light misty rain.
