Can you feel it? It’s right around the corner, teasing us. Its warmth has shone down upon us, offering flirtatious temps but only for a flash. All of its signs are detectable: visible leaves on the sidewalks, excruciating potholes, baseball underway, ice fishing houses out of sight, March 20th come and gone. It’s springtime! Snow keeps trying to win, but it won’t be long until it shows its mercy. We’ve been hard at work preparing for what we hope will be our best season yet. In roughly one short month we’ll be out on the water doing what we love most in Minnesota – BOATING!
Members who frequent Minnetonka will likely enjoy themselves even more this summer than in years past. During the off-season, we purchased the marina on Brown’s Bay. What does that mean to YBC and our members? It means everyone can rely on the comfort of knowing that we have the location locked up, guaranteeing that we have the spot for many years to come. We have been working with the city to work out an agreement that will allow us to add more boats. Not only will that raise our membership cap at Minnetonka, it will result in an even more fluid availability of boat reservations.
Additionally, we are in the process of rebuilding the gazebo, making some major changes to provide a smoother, more comfortable experience for our members. When we opened up Minnetonka five years ago we were working out of a 30-year-old gazebo. Finally, with the new improvements – including a refurbished bathroom, new screens and doors, new paneling, a garage door, and new paint – we can be much more efficient than in the past.
Minnetonka manager Brian Maxey is ecstatic about the changes. “In the past the hurdles of redecorating was out of our hands,” says Maxey. “Now that we own the marina we are able to give the location a much-needed facelift.”
We are very excited to announce the addition of two models of Monterey boats to our fleet. As you know, we are very particular about the boats we purchase. We thoroughly research and carefully investigate our options before concluding our investments to assure you have the best boating experience possible. Ours are some of the most beautiful, comfortable and fuel-efficient boats on the water. Monterey runabouts are no exception.
If you are in search of an adventure in a stylish sports boat, I am your model. Equipped with a long list of standard features that others call optional – precise handling, fuel efficiency, and sleek comfort – I am the complete package. My facet series hull comes standard with Monterey’s air-assist chine, which increases fuel efficiency and allows me to stay on plane at slower speeds for water sports, while also providing tight cornering and precise handling.
New for this year, my package redefines the Monterey 204! Extreme Graphics adorn my hull side over Monterey’s premium gelcoat color. An onyx gelcoat hull bottom and deck accent stripe make me stand out from the rest. As if that isn’t enough, my standard extended swim platform is also onyx. All this gelcoat compliments my onyx windshield frame perfectly. My SeaDek swim platform inlay makes the swim platform a perfect hangout on the water. Already loaded with features from the standard FS model my package is a sure winner.
I am the very first model of Monterey’s amazing M Series of exciting multi-usage sports boats. Positively, I raise the bar in boating. I am a versatile boat, ideal for cruising, water sports, fishing, or anything else you desire. Thanks to an award-winning hull designed by Monterey engineers, solid performance and excellent stability are a couple of my key features. With quick planing times and the ability to stay on plane at low speeds, I am ideal for water sports.
If you are looking for a day filled with fun, while hoping to impress your group, look no further. I aim to please. My standard tri-tone gelcoat is incredibly stylish. Reserve me and take your friends or entire family out for a day of cruising, skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing. You’ll have all the space and amenities an active crew will appreciate like never before. I am style, luxury and performance personified.

Chances are, if you’ve ventured out to Prior Lake, you already know Matt Podkopacz. Matt’s the guy who likely greeted you with a smile a mile wide and a joke to match. This year will be his fourth season managing the Prior Lake location. The guy who schedules the crew to take care of 18 boats, Matt is the glue that holds YBC’s second largest location together. GET TO KNOW Matt a bit more below.
MATT PODKOPACZ – PRIOR’S PRIORITY
Whether giving on-the-water orientations to new members in the snow, captaining crews on sunny days or removing the last boat on the lake in the fall, Matt is happy to be on the water as much as possible. YBC Operations Manager and long-time friend of Matt’s, Brian Maxey, first informed Matt of the opportunity to manage Prior Lake after YBC’s first season. Understanding that if the public did not enjoy the club that his job would only last one summer, Matt’s faith led him to accept the offer. Five years in, the members are happy and Matt’s job is secure.
In his free time Matt loves to play disc golf, go fishing, tubing, and just being outdoors in general. When inside four walls he enjoys attending live concerts. During the summer, Matt truly enjoys his job and everything that goes along with it. Though it can be challenging at times – especially “trying to fix a boat on the fly” – it’s mostly fun and rewarding for Matt. “I love watching members come into the bay after having a blast on the water,” says Matt. “It really makes me smile when the members leave saying, ‘Today was great; see you tomorrow!’”
Matt’s hard work and positive energy is contagious, often rubbing off on fellow YBC employees. White Bear Lake Manager Brian Wegner trained with Matt at Prior early in 2012, riding along during orientations. “I noticed how much fun Matt had during orientations and how comfortable he made the members feel,” recalls Brian. “I carried that energy over with me to White Bear and hope that my members there have as much fun as they do at Prior.”
Matt sees a big future with YBC. Ultimately, he hopes to see YBC locations in all the surrounding states in the Midwest, as well as on the east coast. With all the hard work employees like Matt put in making sure YBC members get great customer service while using clean, reliable boats his vision just might come true.
