WHAT IS CHANGING?
1
Minnesota has passed a new law requiring all boat operators, regardless of age, to hold a valid boater safety certificate in order to legally operate a boat.
Does this apply to Your Boat Club members?
2
Yes. This law applies to all members and anyone driving a boat in Minnesota waters. This includes all drivers.
Is this a Your Boat Club policy?
3
No. This is a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) law. Your Boat Club is required to inform members of the regulation, but the requirement comes from the State of Minnesota.
When do I need to complete the course?
4
You should complete the course before your first reservation to ensure you are legally allowed to operate the boat.
What course do I need to take?
5
You can complete the Minnesota-approved online boating safety course here:
Approximate Time: 3-6 hours
Certification is valid for life
Is there a faster option?
6
Yes. Minnesota also offers a temporary 180-day permit option:
Cost: $9.99
Approximate Time: 15 minutes online
This option allows you to operate legally while giving you time to complete the full certification later.
Which option should I choose?
7
If you plan to boat regularly in Minnesota, the lifetime certification course is recommended. If you need immediate access for an upcoming reservation, the 180-day permit may be the fastest solution.
How long is the full certification valid?
8
The full boater safety certification is valid for life.
What happens if I operate a boat without certification?
9
Operating a boat without the required certification may result in fines or penalties from the State of Minnesota. Members and renters are responsible for complying with the law and any penalties incurred.
Do passengers also need certification?
10
No. The law applies to the person operating the boat.
Does this apply even if I’ve been boating for years?
11
Yes. The requirement applies regardless of boating experience or age.
Will Your Boat Club check for certification?
12
Members and renters should be prepared to provide proof of certification or permit if requested, but our current practice is not to check for certification but to inform you of the regulation in case you are pulled over on the water and asked for provide proof of certification.
What happens if I get pulled over and don’t have the certification?
13
All waterways are patrolled differently, and as this is a new regulation, is being enforced at different levels. In the event you cannot provide proof of your boater’s safety certification, at worst you will receive a ticket, which you are responsible for paying. Some patrols are more lenient and are offering warnings instead of tickets, but we STRONGLY recommend completing the course(s) and getting in compliance if you plan on boating this summer.
What if I completed a boater’s safety course prior to the start of this regulation (July 1, 2025)?
14
It is recommended to complete the updated safety courses, as prior certifications do not appear to be valid under the new regulations.
What if I have a certification from another state?
15
State to state boating certifications are generally reciprocal, meaning that if you have completed a lifelong boating safety course in another state, it is valid in Minnesota. For specific questions regarding reciprocity, please contact the MN DNR directly at info.dnr@state.mn.us or 651-296-6157.
Who can I contact with questions?
